Prevention of congenital rubella syndrome

چکیده

How effective has the rubella vaccination program been? Before rubella immunization, the majority of Canadians contracted rubella during childhood. The rubella vaccination program has been very effective, with there being fewer than 30 cases of rubella per year reported in Canada between 1998 and 2004 [2] compared with a mean of over 15,000 cases per year between 1941 and 1958. There were over 300 cases of rubella reported in southwestern Ontario in 2005, primarily in communities opposed to immunization – a situation that is likely to recur [2]. There has been enhanced surveillance of rubella through the Canadian Measles Rubella Surveillance System since 2006. There were only one to 13 cases of rubella annually in Canada in 2006-2014 (49 cases in total) (www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/diseases-conditionsmaladies-affections/disease-maladie/rubella-rubeole/ surveillance-eng.php) and no cases in 2015 (www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/mrwr-rhrr/2015/w52/indexeng.php). Over that ten year period, there were single cases of CRS reported in 2009 and 2011. The incidence of abortions and stillbirths related to rubella in Canada is not known.

The importance of implementing, monitoring and evaluating congenital rubella syndrome surveillance

Rubella, once considered being a mild, benign rash illness, gained public health significance in 1941 when Gregg [1] associated the significance of congenital cataracts with rubella during pregnancy. In 1962–1965, a rubella pandemic resulted in approximately 12.5 million rubella cases, 20,000 infants born with congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), 11,250 fetal deaths (fetal wastage and abortions),...
